Berkeley Chinese Community Church (BCCC)
Rev. Karl Fung
The Rev. Dr. Karl Fung was raised in Hong Kong and received his
B.A. (honors) degree in Chinese Literature and Religion from
ChungChi College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  

Responding to the call to ministry, he went to Chicago to study at
McCormick Theological Seminary in 1973 and received his
Master of Divinity (M. Div.) degree in 1976. As soon as he was
ordained as a minister by the United Church of Christ, he was
called to become the pastor of the Chinese Community Church in
Detroit, Michigan.  

He later moved to California to serve as the pastor of the San
Diego Chinese Community Church for 13 years. He also earned
his Doctor of Ministry (D. Min.) degree from San Francisco
Theological Seminary during this period.

He joined the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps as a reservist in 1984
and was activated during Operations Desert Shield and Desert
Storm. He later joined the Navy full time as an active duty chaplain.
Chaplain Fung deployed with the Marines in 2003 during
Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He provided
much needed ministry to a great number of Marines during the war
moving from Kuwait to Bagdad. He conducted worship in Ur,
Abraham’s birth place, and preached to near a thousand Marines
on Palm Sunday in Bagdad. His personal award includes the
Legion of Merit Medal.

Pastor Fung received training from both Robert Schuller and Rick
Warren on church growth. He is determined to apply what he
learned to build up the BCCC. Rev. Fung speaks Cantonese and
Mandarin and he enjoys listening to music, both classical and
oldies.
